Fort Dobbs

Year: 1958
Attributes: B/W
Rating:
Length: 93 minutes

Featured Bears: Clint Walker

Review:
The scene with him shirtless while camping by the river on his way to Fort Dobbs with the rancher's widow and son is as good if not better than the shot of his chopping wood in Night of the Grizzly. Even in B/W, it is still stirring.

Paint Your Wagon

Year: 1969
Attributes: Color, NTSC, VHS
Rating:
Length: 165 minutes

Featured Bears: Clint Eastwood   Lee Marvin

Review:
Rated M From a Learner and Loewe musical. Prospecter Ben (Lee Marvin) and Partner (Clint Eastwood) team up on a gold claim when Ben buys a wife at an auction. They decide to share, but it end up destroying their happy relationship. Songs like "Wand'rin Star", "The Best Things in Life are Dirty", and "I Talk to the Trees" sung by non-singers Marvin and Eastwood and a No-Name Town full of husky, bearded miners just make it that much more fun. Best line: "Don't love your neighbor, leave the bastard alone!"

Review:
Kline, Cleese and Dennehy all sport beards. (I think Danny Glover might too). Lots of other eye candy. Fun movie - not a comedy but several light moments.

Featured Bears: William Holden   Ernest Borgnine   Ben (I) Johnson   Robert Ryan

Review:
Sam Peckinpah's classic Western with that typically elegiac feeling to it, with the requisite violence, but it is notable for the central relationship between Holden and Borgnine. Are they just good friends? Have they been lovers? The looks they give up sometimes makes one wonder. Bonus points for all the other Bears in supporting roles, such as Dub Taylor.
