Out and About

Adventures in Toronto

Terry M sent us this report about the Motor City Bears' recent trip to Toronto, Ontario. Terry stayed at Muther's Guesthouse, which is located above the Toolbox (a local bar).

Some of us arrived early on Thursday (naked night there). It was fun... there were about 15-20 people completely naked and some of the rest were in various stages of undress. After a night of fun at the Toolbox we retired upstairs to the room.

Brad and I shared room #6 together. It was decorated in Southwest style, with cable television, air conditioner, couch, a huge closet and a double bed. The room didn't have a shower so we ended up using the community shower and bathroom.

On Friday, many of the bears arrived on the early train. They all enjoyed the train ride, which was about 5 hours long. Friday was pretty much a free day for most of us. I, however, had to run around town to get to an internet company and download pictures from our web site (thanks Rob for maintaining it so well, it REALLY came in handy!). After I had the pictures, I had to make them into posters. I forgot to do this before I left, so I had to make them on the fly.

We forgot our raffle tickets too, so I got some on Church Street, the heart of the gay community in Toronto. We saw some really woofy bears on Church Street and invited them to our bar night on Saturday at the Toolbox. They already knew all about it! :)

Among the bars that we visited were the Black Eagle, Sailor, Woody's (great food, reasonable prices!), and The Barn / The Stables. Some of us were saddened to learn that the Bijou Theater was closed down only a few weeks before we went.

During the day on Saturday, we had some free time. Some of the members went to town to shop (Eaton's is going out of business), so we went to Eaton Center located on Younge Street. There were some really high priced items there, even after the sale prices. I didn't end up buying anything, except some soda from one of the restaurants in the food court. Oh and I stopped by Ms. Fields and got some cookies to go. On the way back I stopped at a Goodwill store. They were having a 50% off sale so I decided to look around. There were some good bargains and I got a computer keyboard for $2.50!

Saturday night was the bar night. Mark R. (Vice-President) got things started with the 50-50 ticket selling. The prices were $1 each or $5 crotch-to-floor. He really enjoys the crotch-to-floor measurements. Some of our members were manning the back bar all night long, from 10 PM on. We had a lot of fun!

Afterwards, we had a late-night party at the Guesthouse. We gave tickets to members and told them to give them to people that they thought might want to join us. Management warned us not to let anyone up without a ticket, and that we were responsible for any damages done. But we didn't have to worry about that. The people that came up were friendly, polite, and woofy... we all had a very good time.

On Sunday we had to leave. Some of the bears had to take the early train, and were gone before I woke up. The rest of us went to brunch, which was a nice spread for only $6. It was hard to leave some of our new friends. We will be back next year if we can plan it around our Motown Bear Cruise (which is scheduled for August 18-20, 2000.)

Terry currently serves as president of the Motor City Bears in southeastern Michigan.
