"Bears in the Outdoors a Roaring Success," says the headline
from latest Kansas City Cave Bears newsletter. The August
27th event attracted bears from all over the central US.
Among the many fun events was the Bear Sundae Contest, where
volunteer 'dessert plates' allowed themselves to be
decorated with whipped cream by the designated chef bears.
The winner was described as a '10-incher' (use your
imagination). Then there was a contest for who could eat
their human 'dessert' the quickest. (Melts in your mouth, not in your
hands, eh guys?) Judging from two hair-raising photos of
bears in coconut bras and grass skirts, one of the other
parties involved a tropical theme (and a *lot* of margaritas.)
Not your standard bear-wear, but it sure looked like fun!
If you missed the merry-making, mark off your calendar for
next year's BITO 2000 run.

A recent issue of the FAT Angel Times (produced by Girth &
Mirth/Belgium) mentions the upcoming EBMC 1999, billed as
"the biggest event of the European Girth & Mirth movement".
This year's convergence is set for October 21-25 in Berlin.
For more info see the EBMC web site.
They also mention the debut of an interesting web site for
gay
truckers in France.

Looking ahead to November, the DC Bear Club is getting ready
for Bear Invasion '99, on November 12-14, 1999. The
brochure promises: "It's more than a run. It's an
adventure..." Sounds like a blast! On the exact same weekend, the
Show Me Bears are holding their
famous HiBearNation '99 run in beautiful St. Louis. Check out the clubs' web sites
for more info.
Speaking of bear runs: The BurghBears newsletter makes an
excellent observation about the ever-growing "bear circuit":
"If you can swing the hotel and air fare, you could spend
just about every weekend in a different locale surrounded by
bears." They compiled a nice list of upcoming events for
their members, and mentioned another good resource, the
BearCalendar at www.resourcesforbears.com.

And looking even further ahead: What better way to usher in
the new year than a calendar full of woofy Australian bears?
We first heard about the OZ Bear 2000 calendar in a
VicBears newsletter and decided to check out their web
site. The sample pictures are beautifully done, and the
models radiate a fuzzy, masculine warmth that'll make even
the toughest daddybear swoon. VicBears just held a party at
the Laird Hotel to celebrate the launch of the calendar, which
also begins a week-long exhibition of the photos used in the
calendar. You can check out the preview photos and place an
order through the calendar's
web site
Besides supporting the OZ 2000 calendar, VicBears are also
gearing up for Grrrampians '99. This weekend romp will take
place in Grampians National Park from Oct 29-31.

And here's another tip-off we got from the VicBears (thanks to
Phil Webster):
While they say they aren't a 'real' club yet,
the Bears of Turkey have created a very interesting web site
about their efforts to find and organize like-minded bears
in their country. These guys note that the Resources for
Bears web site received its first connections from Turkey
back in 1995. (And we got over 100 hits from Turkey last
month --ed.) So maybe there are more bears in Turkey than
you might think! So pay a visit to their
web page and say
"Vuf!" to these hard-working bears.

Meanwhile back in America, the Heart of Texas Bears have an
eye-popping twelve events planned for October, which is more
than most clubs do in six months. Their events cover a wide
range of interests, from a beer bust to a 'Page Pawers'
get-together for literature-loving bears. And not only are
they busy, they're talented. Their latest newsletter
mentions that one of their members, who goes by the name Rex
Austin, recently designed some new artwork and icons for
Dave Hooker's Bear Quay web site. You can also see some of
Rex's art at the Stop the Hate web site.

Final thought: Scott LaGreca may have been in New England,
but his pals in the Carolina Bear Lodge didn't forget him.
Their recent newsletter has congratulations for Scott, who
won the title of Mr. Cub New England at an August contest
held by the New England Bears. That's bear brotherhood for
ya!
