Here's a great excuse to go teddy bear shopping: at their
December 9th meeting, the
New
England Bears will be
collecting new, unwrapped teddy bears. The teddy bears
will be given to charities for children with AIDS and
other illnesses. Last year's teddy bear drive was a big
success and they're hoping for plenty of fuzzy, furry friends
this year.
For more information see the club's web page or
send mail to info@nebears.org.

Clock's ticking folks. Are you ready for "the last bear
run of the millennium"? That's what they're calling the
MidWest BearFest, scheduled for December 17-19 in lovely
Indianapolis, IN. You can register on the
MidWest
BearPack's web page.

As for the title of "first bear run of the millennium", it
will probably belong to the Fiesta de los Osos. This annual
bear gathering will take place in Tucson, AZ during
January 14-17, 2000. Besides warm weather, frolicking and
friendliness, it will feature a bear contest with
cactus-themed titles. (You have to admit, "Mr Saguaro
Bear 2000" has a certain ring to it.) The
Bears of Old
Pueblo (BOP) have all the details and a registration form
on their web site. The cutoff comes after the first 150 non-members or
December 31, whichever comes first.

Which brings us to the daddybear of bear runs,
International Bear Rendezvous (IBR). This year's shindig
is February 17-21. The events include old favorites like
the Online Party and International Bear Competition. And
if you're looking for a bedmate that doesn't hog the
covers, one of the optional activities is a tour of a
teddy bear factory.

Speaking of the
Bears
of San Francisco (BOSF), we learned from
their newsletter that the club had a September
get-together to celebrate its fifth birthday. While it's
impressive for any club to last that long, what's more
impressive is the $100,000+ that the club has donated to
charities since its inception. And a significant amount
comes from funds raised at the IBR bear run. To learn
more or register for IBR, check out the club's
newly-redesigned web page at www.bosf.org.

In our last column, we mentioned the upcoming five-year anniversary of another
well-known California club:
Bears
Ventura. Besides
their birthday party, their newsletter tells of an October
trip to Pine Mountain. Apparently the trip involved a
"mooning" ceremony for new members, a large teddy bear,
and a strange game called "Gay Trivial Pursuit". ("Alex, I'll take
Bad Barbara Streisand Movies for $200.") These
gentlemen are full of creative ideas. As further proof,
club recently held a "wet underwear night" at the
Faultline. Yes folks, it was the bear equivalent of a wet
T-shirt contest -- with white Fruit-of-the-Looms being the
preferred attire (and very little else!)

With cold winter upon us, the interesting clothing (or the lack of it)
at this year's Folsom Street Fair seems like a long time ago.
This leather event, a tradition in San Francisco, was attended by several bear clubs
such as BOSF and Bears Ventura. If you missed the sights
you can get an eyeful in a new area of
Lynn Ludwig's
site devoted to Folsom '99.

"So THAT'S where I left my car keys!"

And speaking of adventures, the Carolina Bear Lodge's
newsletter tells of a member's brush with fate at the
recent Bear Bust in Orlando:
While the scores were being tallied for the competition,
an auction was held. The money would go to two
charities. The prize was the jockstrap that Mack [a bear
porn star] was wearing. To make a long story short, I had
the winning bid for the jock. I then got to go onstage and
take the jock off... with my teeth!!"
To see what all the fuss is about, check out Denny's "Out and About" report on
Bear Bust '99. And
since even porn stars have web pages these days, you learn more
about "Mack" at
www.macksf.com.

And finally, a little humor for the new year:
The makers of KY Jelly have just announced that their
product is Year 2000 compliant. They have renamed the
product Y2KY because it now allows you to insert four
digits into your date.
