Fur On the Screen

The Tampax Cub

Scene: Conference room with a woman and a cubbish young man. The woman says she'll be back in a few minutes. Left alone, our curious cub looks at a box of tampons which, for some unexplained reason, is sitting on the conference table. Pretty soon he's got the box open and he starts fiddling with the strange l'il feminine objects. He looks adorably perplexed throughout the ad. It ends with a voiceover: "Tampax tampons: even men are impressed."

Where to see it: we have a gallery of pictures from the ad. You can see the ad itself during commercial breaks on US television, especially shows that have large female audiences. (We caught it during "Dark Angel".)

Powerpuff Girls Video

Recently, Cartoon Network has been playing the video for "Signal in the Sky," a song from the new Powerpuff Girls soundtrack CD. The song is performed by The Apples In Stereo, an indie pop group fronted by handsomely-bearded Robert Schneider (right in photo). In the video, a fish-like monster terrorizes the band and the citizens of Townsville until the Powerpuff Girls come to the rescue.

Where to see it: At various times on Cartoon Network or at BurlyBear.com (try this site or this one)

Harry Potter Preview Trailer

In November 2001, a movie version of J.K. Rowling's best-selling novel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone should be in the theaters. The recently-released preview trailer gives us a few glimpses of Rubeus Hagrid (played by Robbie Coltrane), the school groundskeeper. Here's how Rowling describes Hagrid when he makes his first appearance in Sorcerer's Stone:

A huge motorcycle fell out of the air and landed on the road in front of them.

If the motorcycle was huge, it was nothing to the man sitting astride it. He was almost twice as tall as a normal man, and at least five times as wide. He looked simply too big to be allowed, and so wild - long tangles of bushy black hair and beard hid most of his face, he had hands the size of trash can lids, and his feet in their leather boots were like baby dolphins. In his vast, muscular arms he was holding a bundle of blankets.

"Hagrid," said Dumbledore, sounding relieved. "At last."

So if you like wild-looking, motorcycle-riding bears in leather boots, then Hagrid's your man.

Lord of the Rings Preview Trailer

Films in medieval settings are always fertile ground for fur sightings, and the upcoming Lord of the Rings movie looks like it won't disappoint. Besides woofy blond bear Karl Urban as Eomer (above), it'll also have John Rhys-Davies, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Bean and Sir Ian McKellen. And we hear that the behind-the-scenes bits on the website are made all the more interesting by the appearance of stocky, bearish director Peter Jackson. (Thanks to Steve Kluth for the tip.)
